The Visit Knoxville Open is one of the longest-standing tournaments on the Korn Ferry Tour, carrying a proud history that stretches back to the earliest days of the Tour. Over the years, it has showcased future stars of the PGA TOUR, provided a stage for breakthrough victories, and created a tradition that few other events can match. History of the Visit Knoxville Open
Inaugural Knoxville Open held (one of the original Korn Ferry Tour events). Jeff Maggert is crowned champion.
Tournament moves to Three Ridges (from Willow Creek) for a period (1995–98). Was named the Nike Knoxville Open.
Knoxville News Sentinel becomes title sponsor (starting a long-term sponsorship)
Peter Malnati, a local golf standout from Jefferson County, wins his hometown Korn Ferry Tour event, a milestone that connects the tournament with one of Tennessee’s future PGA TOUR winners
Stephen Jager, another Tennessee prep product from Baylor High School in Chattanooga, wins by three strokes to solidify his path to the PGA TOUR.
Announcement that the tournament would relocate to Holston Hills Country Club and be rebranded as the Visit Knoxville Open
The tournament is canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic

KORN FERRY TOUR
Founded (1990), owned and operated by the PGA TOUR, the Korn Ferry Tour identifies and develops golf’s next stars, preparing them to compete and win on the game’s biggest stage. The Korn Ferry Tour has served as the path to the PGA TOUR since its inception and will award 30 PGA TOUR cards based off its points list in 2023. With more than 600 PGA TOUR titles, 28 major championships and six FedExCup champions, Korn Ferry Tour alumni make up 88 percent of the PGA TOUR’s current membership. Just east of Knoxville and nestled near the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, Holston Hills Country Club is home to one of the nation’s most authentic and well-preserved Donald Ross golf courses. Built in 1927, the course was quickly recognized as the finest in Tennessee, hosting every major regional tournament — including a PGA Tour event during Byron Nelson’s historic 1945 season. Today, Holston Hills remains a standout among private golf clubs and consistently earns top rankings from Golfweek, GOLF.com, and other respected publications.
TENNESSEE GOLF FOUNDATION
The TGF operates out of Golf House Tennessee, located in Franklin, which is home to the state’s governing bodies of golf — the Tennessee Golf Foundation, the Tennessee Golf Association, the Tennessee Section PGA and TGF Junior Golf. Golf House Tennessee also features The Little Course at Conner Lane – a state-of-the-art learning center with a nine-hole, par-three course and driving range, with programming for all ages and skill levels. The TGF focuses on initiatives for juniors, veterans and the disadvantaged, with such offerings as the Sneds Tour, the Tennessee PGA Junior Golf Academy, Special Olympics Golf, PGA HOPE, The First Tee, Tennessee Middle School Golf and the Scott Stallings Kids Play Free Program.
